HVAC / Mechanical Permit Inspections in Los Angeles

What LADBS HVAC inspections are required? Rough-in, final, and scheduling your mechanical inspection.

Los Angeles HVAC Inspection Overview

HVAC installations performed under a Los Angeles mechanical permit must be inspected by LADBS at key stages of the project to confirm compliance with the approved permit, the Los Angeles Mechanical Code, and California Title 24 energy requirements. Scheduling inspections correctly is essential to keeping your HVAC project on track.

Rough-In Mechanical Inspection

A rough-in inspection is required after HVAC equipment, ductwork, and gas or refrigerant lines are installed but before they are concealed within walls, ceilings, or insulation. During the rough-in inspection, the LADBS inspector reviews ductwork installation, sizing, and routing, gas line connections and pressure test results, refrigerant line installation and protection, equipment clearances and placement, and electrical connections at the equipment.

Final Mechanical Inspection

A final inspection is required after the complete HVAC system is installed and operational. The inspector verifies that equipment operates correctly and safely, ductwork is properly sealed and insulated per Title 24, all safety controls and shutoffs function correctly, the system matches the approved permit scope, and combustion appliances are properly vented.

Title 24 Field Verification

California Title 24 energy standards require field verification of certain HVAC installation requirements, including duct leakage testing (HERS testing), refrigerant charge verification, and airflow testing for forced-air systems. These field verifications are performed by certified HERS (Home Energy Rating System) raters and may be required in addition to the LADBS inspection.

Scheduling Your Los Angeles HVAC Inspection

Schedule LADBS HVAC inspections online through the LADBS inspection portal, via the LADBS Go mobile app, or by calling the Automated Inspection Request System (AIRS). Have the permit number and job site address ready. Inspections should be scheduled for the appropriate stage — do not conceal ductwork or equipment before the rough-in inspection.
